On the Work
"There is a precision to abstraction that most people miss. Every mark is deliberate — even the ones that look like accidents."
Joakim Walldoff occupies a rare position: a senior figure in the world of finance, operating daily inside a domain that prizes precision, restraint, and the cold clarity of numbers — yet in his studio, he speaks an entirely different language. His paintings are visceral. Immediate. Built from layers of pigment applied with the same uncompromising attention he brings to every decision in his professional life.
What sets Walldoff apart is not the contradiction between those two worlds, but the way they inform each other. The discipline of finance — its insistence on reading systems, on understanding what lies beneath the surface — translates directly into how he constructs a canvas. Nothing is arbitrary. Every relationship of colour, every tension between form and negative space, is the result of an acute sensitivity to structure that others might spend a lifetime trying to develop.
His works are abstract, but they are not vague. They provoke strong reactions — they are meant to. Collectors describe standing in front of a Walldoff painting and feeling something shift; a discomfort, or an unexpected calm, or something that resists easy naming. That resistance is intentional. He is not interested in paintings that ask nothing of the viewer.
Process
Each work begins in silence. Walldoff does not sketch or plan in the conventional sense — the canvas itself is the sketchbook. He works predominantly in oils and acrylics, often combining them within a single piece, building up texture through repeated application and strategic removal. The physical surface of a finished work carries that history; you can read the decisions in the impasto, the scrape marks, the places where colour has been pushed through colour.
He works in limited series — sometimes only two or three pieces around a particular tension before moving on. Each is signed and unique. He does not reproduce his paintings, and he does not revisit a completed work. When it is done, it is done.
On Collecting
